3December 2014 : an historical date for the United Arab Emirates. The DUBAI RESOLUTION 46 signed by HRH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum (Crown Prince of Dubai) became official and permitted DEWA (Dubai Electricity and Water Authority) to implement, on March 15th, 2015 the SHAMS DUBAI INITIATIVE, allowing everybody in Dubai, to install solar power plants on rooftops, connecting them to the public grid, upon a NET METERING concept. This means now everybody in Dubai, having a DEWA grid-connection, can apply for solar energy self-production, cutting energy bills. This is a REAL REVOLUTION, achieving to transform Dubai in the world smartest and greener city ever, according to the recently launched DUBAI CLEAN ENERGY PLAN 2050.
DEWA has a well-defined strategy and an magnificent vision to support the development and establishment of sustainable energy projects in Dubai.
Now the increased targets for renewable energy are 7% of Dubai’s total power output by 2020 and 25% by 2030, to support the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, launched by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid. The scope is to make Dubai a global centre of clean energy and green economy. It aims to increase Dubai’s total power output from clean energy sources to 75% by 2050. The DEWA Shams Dubai encourages tenants and building owners to install photovoltaic solar panels to generate electricity. DEWA will connect the system to its network. The electricity will be used onsite and the surplus is exported to DEWA’s grid. This condition makes feasible and convenient the use of solar energy, increases its share in electricity production and diversifies the energy mix.
